What Firing Does to Ceramic Glaze, Color and Strength
Firing is not simply a heating step. It is where clay body, glaze and decoration respond together, making kiln control central to the finished piece.

A kiln changes materials, not only temperature
Before firing, a ceramic body and its surface materials are still in an unfinished state. As the kiln follows a controlled heating and cooling cycle, the body becomes denser and the glaze develops into a continuous surface bonded to the form.
The result depends on the complete firing curve, not only the highest number shown on a temperature display. Heating speed, time at key stages, kiln atmosphere, placement and cooling can all influence the finished object.
Color must be understood after firing
Many ceramic colors do not look the same before and after the kiln. Pigments and glaze respond to heat and to one another, so sample development and repeated testing are necessary before a pattern can be reproduced with useful consistency.
This is also why color should be assessed under more than one kind of light. A stable firing result still appears warmer, cooler, brighter or quieter depending on the room and viewing conditions.
Control is more important than a single label
Terms such as high-fired or durable can be useful descriptions, but they do not replace production records and finished-product inspection. Different ceramic bodies and glazes are designed for different firing ranges and uses.
